SVIS: Best Co-ed Boarding School in Tirupati, AP, India |

Campus:

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Mr. Kieran E Rigney

I have spent 22 years as a teacher working in the UK, Asia and Africa. The biggest challenges I have faced this school year are getting to know a new community, staff, and students; building relationships with different people; and learning the workings of an Indian school, which has a different culture from my previous positions.

I believe that what we do in school is vital to our world in many ways. Locally, we provide students with a sense of belonging and we connect them to their community. Also, we encourage students to have a positive outlook for what we do as a city. Nationally, we help to develop young people who can examine events within the context of a multicultural nation and understand different viewpoints. Globally, we want to develop perceptive individuals who have empathy for others and think about the impact their actions will have on those around them. I believe that a strong school leader is someone who can balance being a collaborative administrator within a learning community, an individual manager whom others seek for guidance, and a discerning principal who makes child-focused decisions.

I learn new things each day and that keeps me going. It’s like teaching a new subject for the first time. You’re nervous and you may feel that you’re not as prepared as you’d like to be. However, as the months roll by, you discover things that you didn’t know about yourself and about the students you teach. That’s motivating! Also, each child has a story that needs to be heard. We must take time to hear those stories. We teach children, not subjects — that is important to remember.

Kieran Eugene Rigney

STUDENT LEADERS IN BOARDING

Students boarder council is a students-run organization whose purpose is to represent and support Borders school students. A team of selected student representatives (the Executive team) work on your behalf to identify issues that affect students and draw them to the school’s attention. They will run campaigns, challenges school policies and ensure they have representation on every Faculty Council Meeting to ensure your voice is being heard. Our door is always open so if you are experiencing any difficulties at school boarding, get in touch or pop into the office. It’s our job to listen and to help, whatever the issue. If we can’t help directly, we can always refer you to someone who can.

Throughout the week, nine of our Student Council Committees meet to brainstorm, plan, and carryout plans of action for their objectives. As of now we have committees for housing, dining, events, academics, volunteering, environmentalism, and more. If a student wants to create a committee for something we don’t already offer, they simply have to propose it to the Student Council Executives with five members and we will determine whether or not to approve it. In order to expand leadership opportunities and give everyone the chance and framework to make changes on campus, Student Council Committees are 100% student-led. Committees are an imperative component to what makes our Student Council so important.

BOARDING ETHOS

Boarding life is the heart of SVIS and boarding staff play a pivotal role in the pastoral, social and emotional wellbeing of their students. The boarding team is headed by the Principal who is supported by the Vice-Principal [Home Affairs], and the Housemasters and House Mistresses, Assistant Housemasters and mistresses, residential house staff, Housemothers and a range of support staff.

“SVIS is a home away from home, which maintains traditional values in a family atmosphere.”

There are three boarding houses, The U-BLOCK which is for all girls, The B-2 block for the Junior Boys, and the A-Block for senior boys. Each child is under the supervision and care of a Boarding Housemaster or Housemistress responsible for his or her specific age group. Each purpose-built boarding house provides modern amenities including attractive bedrooms, superb bath and shower facilities, comfortable common and recreational rooms, and a quiet study area.

In boarding we provide a home away from home where we maintain traditional values in a family atmosphere. We develop in the children a desire for truth, decorum, courtesy and high-achievement. These values are the cornerstones of success.

We provide an environment whereby students can develop their intellectual talents in an atmosphere of positive encouragement and in conditions that are conducive to work. Daily prep is well-structured, supervised, orderly and silent.

We encourage students to participate in activities in an atmosphere which values effort.

We provide a broad range of activities, hobbies and pastimes related to age and maturity that will assist in the personal, social and cultural development of each student. These may include inter-house competitions, instrumental and vocal music, drama, speech and debate, visits to the theatre, festivals, talent nights, moon light and formal dinners with VIP guest speakers, which help students to develop qualities of leadership and teamwork and we encourage students to become fully involved in the corporate life of their house and to recognize and support the needs of others through service to their peers.

Boarding builds self-confidence, independence, the capacity to interact with adults and fellow-students, self-discipline and a sense of direction. Throughout the experience of boarding friendships are made which last a lifetime and a sense of identity with the school is strongly forged.

FACILITIES

CARE & WELLBEING:

As a 24/7 boarding school, we take our commitment to the health and well-being of our students extremely seriously. Four full-time nurses live in our eight-bed medical centre and a doctor is always on call. For emergencies we have a driver and vehicle ready round the clock. Parents will always be called immediately in the case of any serious medical issue. The nurses bring students to clinics and hospitals for checkups and tests as required. All medicines are stored securely in the medical centre and no student is permitted to have medicine in their study bedrooms. All precautions are taken to ensure that each child is healthy and cared for with sensitivity and positivity by our professional staff.

The system of caring is based very much on the family, where parents constantly look after their children and are worried about their every need. The staff and the facilities on campus, especially the residential program and the supervision system it uses, all work together to offer an atmosphere that is warm and caring.

FOOD:

Expert chefs prepare delicious vegetarian and non-vegetarian Indian and Continental dishes for our students and staff. Hygiene and quality are absolute priorities and the food at SVIS is fresh, wholesome, nutritious and plentiful. Special treats are often in store from our team of chefs, and all meals are served under the supervision of teaching and boarding staff.

Our Kitchen and dining facilities have been completely updated to include the most sophisticated and modern equipment used by the top hotels around the world.

SPORTS & GAMES:-

At SVIS the sporting infrastructure is second to none in India. Immaculately groomed fields for cricket, basketball and volleyball are only the beginning of the experience: we also have courts for tennis, table tennis, badminton, and a superb swimming pool, a gymnasium, a yoga room. Horse riding is taught to children in a professional manner for the children’s benefit and success. Our teams are very successful in local fixtures, but we also compete in C.B.S.E clusters nationally and internationally with the best sporting schools and very frequently we attract VIP sports personalities to our major events.

Our Physical Education staff are highly committed to fitness and wellness. They have vast experience in drawing out the best sporting instincts in students and getting all children involved in what is a superb social as well as physical activity. Teamwork and sportsmanship skills are at the heart of the programme.

Early morning activities at sunrise are a key element of every boarder’s life. They provide a daily opportunity to commune with nature at its finest hour and to build strength and energy for the day ahead. SVIS recognizes that individual students bring differing qualities to the school and learn in different ways. Our sports program provides students with opportunities for developing the fundamental characteristics of commitment, loyalty, selflessness, determination, co-operation, leadership and an appreciation of the role and value of the individual and the group. The sports program aims to emphasis these values in all activities. However, it makes special effort to stress these values in sports where performance is the focus.

STUDY SUPPORT:

A well planned study support system helps our students with their academic achievements and progress. Teachers develop better relationships with students to identify and address their specific learning needs which enhance the self-esteem of our learners and provides motivation to learn.

Study support gives the students individualized help with their work as well as an opportunity to consolidate their learning. Better understanding can be gained which increases them confidence in their ability to handle schoolwork. The time invested is highly productive and leads to the focused learning. It also helps in setting goals, effective time management and self-regulated learning.

For students who are  struggling in class and who are reluctant to ask for help, the study support environment allows them  to seek assistance from peers, mentors and teachers because of the high adult-pupil ratios, absence of disruptive pupils and the trust established between students and teachers. Seeking help leads to greater understanding, which enables students to achieve mastery of the material and gain a greater confidence in their ability to be effective learners.

STUDY SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS APPEARING FOR BOARD EXAMS

In SVIS we are concerned about our student’s success in board exams and our teachers are working rigorously even after school hours to offer them exam prep classes. The teachers help the students to prepare for board exams by clarifying their doubts, peer learning, solving previous year’s question papers and by conducting other creative activities.

This helps the student not only to have a positive approach towards board examination but also helps them to strengthen their basics.

The House System:

The House System is designed in SVIS to embody the values and ethos of the school and aims to be an integral part of our school community. The efficient management of a school depends upon the quality of the House system functioning in the school. A House consists of a group of children effectively led by a responsible teacher (House Master/House Mistress) who acts as a parent, guide, philosopher and friend for every member of the House. A House inherently provides a family atmosphere helping the child to become physically fit, socially adjusted, emotionally balanced and morally upright.

House System Objectives in SVIS:

  • To provide a smooth transition from home life to school life for all students.
  • To develop situation, which fulfill the social and emotional needs of the children.
  • To help socialization of pupils to integrate themselves well into corporate life.
  • To inculcate the sense of responsibility to take his tasks in life earnestly and discharge they well.
  • To prepare pupils to play different kinds of roles as a members of a group, community or society;
  • To develop child’s personality and integrity;
  • To develop the spirit of healthy competition among the children;
  • To inculcate the qualities of self-dignity, self-confidence and respect for others views and opinions and discretion to take their own decision on issues and problems at hand.
  • To benefit by bright example of others and benefit others by his own example.
  • To inculcate in the child respect for seniors, elders, teachers and a caring attitude towards juniors and fraternity towards all;
  • To learn to live, work, endure and enjoy together and develop a degree of sensitivity for others feelings and needs.
  • To inculcate among students personal, social and national values.

House System in SVIS:

Sree Vidyanikethan international school is “Unique” and “Distinct” because of two special features:

  • It is co-educational
  • It is residential

It is “Home away from Home” and provides family & homely atmosphere in making child physically fit. Socially adjusted, emotionally balanced & morally upright.

The efficiency of a residential school depends upon the quality of the house system.

SVIS students are divided into four houses named as:

  • Anjana
  • Garuda
  • Sesha
  • Simha

These four houses represent hills of Tirumala. Each house is under charge of a House master/House Mistress and has students as House Captains, Vice Captains and Prefects who are responsible for organization and discipline. All competitions in games and co-curricular activities are held on a ‘house’ basis.

Each House is allotted a colour.

  • Anjana is Red
  • Garuda is Yellow
  • Sesha is Blue
  • Simha is Green

The house system forges bonds of loyalty, brings children of different age groups together, develops a better student-teacher relationship, encourages self- discipline and arouses greater team spirit.

Students are divided equally in to four houses according to their class strength. School teaching staff also divided equally in to four houses.

Coupling this basic premise with the idea of a sense of belonging to one family—the SVIS family—we look at ourselves as ‘care-givers’. Ours is a sterling academic institution where the accent is on the all-round development of personality.

The world is an Oyster for our children. It is a matter of great pride that the team at SVIS has been able to translate our dream into reality-the dream of “Nurturing World Citizens”.

Here, we are forever endeavouring to make the educational experience rich and sound. We strongly believe that every child should be given the opportunity to develop his or her potential by laying the foundations of a balanced education. Encouraged by the enthusiastic response from discerning parents who are themselves widely recognized as ‘Opinion Makers’, SVIS has started attracting students from all parts of India and abroad thereby making it a truly International School.

At SVIS, your child is guaranteed the constant care and attention of gifted professionals whose commitment to every student goes beyond the call of normal duty. We look forward to a warm and life long relationship with you and your child.

Jai Hind!

These four houses represent hills of Tirumala.
